STATUS UPDATE

Another Election Day, another march to the Egan center. Nothing changes. Who saw me an Dave on the front page behind Begich? Haha.

As per the screening, here are some updates:

The minimal promotion approach to the premiere has been changed a bit. Looks like we have posters up and ads in the Northern Light. Supposedly we get the back page next week.

Also, the screening seems to be on the same night as the "Gender Blender Talent Show" which takes place in the Student Union, just outside the den. Hmmm.

A few KRUA interviews this week. Goin' through the motions.

And in the tradition of all SCU movie premieres, we're not done with it yet. We've got one week to put the final touches on. Don't worry though. We haven't missed a premiere yet.

Movin' Along

The grueling process of audio and color correction is taking place. The 91 minute runtime might be changed by a couple of minutes, but we're still pretty happy with the cut.

Kyle's down at South By Southwest filmfest thing, pimpin' the trailer. Early word is, there might already be some studio interest in a movie shot on such a recent technology, particularly on the camera we shot it on. More details as they unfold.

It's gonna be a couple weeks before we have the premiere copy of the movie, but we hope to get a release date for the premiere, and hold a test screening within the week, so that's pretty much what's going on.

Summer's comin' mofuckas. Yee.

Beekeeping...Cut!

Yep.

Looks like the rough cut will be over 90 minutes, like we'd originally hoped. All we's have to do is fix the kinks and add in some temp music. We're gonna try and have a release date within two or three weeks.

The talent show was just cut tonight. Holy shit. Mofucka's gonna shit theyselves when that scene hits.

Yep. She's about done.

We finally shot the talent show. After shooting Whitlock's bit last week, and the Beekeepers the week before, we shot the talent acts part of it.

First off let me say thanks to everyone who turned out and participated. That was probably the most fun I'd had on the set the entire shoot.

Joey Weaver, John Whitlock, Jared Fink. Wow. The J Troupe pulled they weight today. So hilarious. The other thing we shot today was Whitlock working out. Lord. You'll see.

In other casting news, Derek Haefer goes from Scarface radio host to comedic actor in the talent show scene. Fans of the Scavenger Hunt series will be happy to see what we have in store for them.

Hannah Harrison and Aric Hudson came back and shot some acts as well. Even Scott Stohl (from "The Rock") returned to reprise his role as the dean of the college.

And many newcomers were onsite adding several memorable segments:

Damnit. I wish Dave had given me the list of names of all the people.

Oh, yeah. Dan, who's been following us since before Checked Out was made, even showed up. Yeeah. Best day on the set ever.

Anyway. We watched the footage. It's clear to me the end of the second act talent show will be the funniest part of the movie.

Sunday

Today we shot half of the last two scenes. Next Sunday we will finish the other half.

First, John and Jared in a scene together is like foolproof. I just watched the dailies. Both were entirely on point. Nasty good.

And then John in the soptlight, in the talent show search. Effin' brilliant. O ho.

Release date in sight

77 minutes of the movie is cut. One and a half scenes to be edited, not including the two scenes we're shooting next weekend. It looks like the run time will be somewhere between 85 and 95 minutes. Depending on what we decide to cut from the movie.

On the topic of next weekend, the big talent show scene we've been talking about forever will finally be shot. The second scene to be shot is a new one that was just written a few days ago to replace one of the scenes we decided to toss out. For the John Whitlock/Jared Fink fans. Prepare to see these Scarface dynamos share the screen FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER.

So with so much of the movie done, we recently got a look at a rough version of the final product. I'm quite happy with it, but since I've been editing non stop for the past month it's a lil hard to look at the whole thing objectively. After this week I might take a lil break from the project again, even though I'm pretty anxious to get it out. A mid-march release would be possible, but so as not to rush it, Early April is loooking more likely.

We've been working a lil' on getting a legal soundtrack for the movie, so we can send it out to film fests and whatnot, but that'll come much later. The version you guys will see in March or April will be the good old fashioned guerilla way. Dylan and all.

It's mostly editing these days. And editing indeed we have.

Over 50 minutes of the movie is cut. Mid February will see the rough cut complete.

We do have one more scene to shoot. No telling just when that will happen yet.

But since we last talked we've got a couple more Scarface returnees make an appearance in the flick. It's looking really good so far.

MLK Weekend

This weekend we wrapped all the main characters. Today we shot a scene with a local celebrity. Wait til you see who it is.

What remains is half of the talent show, and the actual wrap party.

Happy New Year, Scarface fans.

As for the lack of updates, well a lot of us spent the Holiday season out of town. Myself, I was visiting sunny Oregon, which was actually not sunny, but rainy and gray.

By now we're all back in Beekeeping mode. And our goal of you know, finishing shooting, wasn't quite met before I left, so we have two dialogue scenes, and a few cutaway shots to complete. Sunday, will see most of that done.

Dean Bradley, Freestyling, Party

Freestyling battle was on Friday. We got that one guy who used to do the Sicilys commercials to be in the scene, but he doesn't have any lines.

We wrapped Scott Stohl (The Rock) in the Dean Bradley scene yesterday. Fantastic work. Later we had a wrap party of sorts, even though the flick isn't done.

Tonight we shoot the very first scene of the movie, tomorrow we shoot some montage stuff, and then I go to Portland for nine days.

In January we have more scene to shoot.

It's mostly editing now. Not much more to report. Keep tuned in, though.

The Last Days...

...A Gus Van Sant movie that I auditioned for but have yet to see. But that's not what I meant by the last days... What I mean to say is that we are in the last days of shooting. Our wrap party is scheduled for the 17th. Nine days from now. We've got precious few scenes (about 7) to shoot before then, some of which very important scenes. We shall finish strong.

Today we shot a small scene with Tony Knowles supporter Nicke Cruthirds, and rising star Jennifer Zilcko. Brilliant stuff by both of them. Nickie in particular has earned herself a regular chair in Scarface Productions, should she choose to sit in it. I can't wait to edit that scene.

Speaking of editing, we did a bit of that tonight too. The opening credits sequence is done and looking LOVELY. We've got a lot of work to do though in the next week. Check back soon for updates.

Cutting

Today I edited a couple scenes. Most notably the Weird Instruments club scene.

And it's probably my favorite scene I've ever cut. I can't believe we pulled off a musical number like this. I won't reveal the identity of the musical genuises behind the scene. At this point I'm just going to tease all you motherfuckers.

Tomorrow. Out last bit of location scouting.
Oh yeah. And in 15 days I'm going away for the Holidays to dreary Portland, Oregon. That gives us 15 days to finish up the following scenes:

Shooting... Will it end?

We didn't get as much as we'd planned to this weekend, but what we did shoot turned out really well. The musical number we shot today written by Bogdan Shepherd kicks so much ass. Shot with finesse and style.

And our Friday shoot was the most visually fun scene to shoot so far. That's all I can say, other than Jeff Warren (a.k.a Justin A.) wrapped his character that day, and he was, as is standard, KILLA, YO. This movie has such diverse sets and scenes so far. I think you guys might just be impressed.

Maybe we'll throw up some pics later this week, but I'm beginning to think you folk have seen quite enough. Check back soon.

Secrets Revealed! Plus Pics! Spoiler Alert!!

Fuck it. The cat's out of the bag now. Today we had an early morning shoot with Scarface legend Paul Jones, who is joining Jeff Warren, Joey Weaver, Ian Dickson, and Mike Sherry in the Scarface trilogy club. His scene was quick to shoot, and should not disappoint you hardcore Jones fanatics. Funny stuff.

Here's a pic of us setting up the Jedi Council homage scene. Part of me wanted all of the extras to lay down in a circle, heads together.

No, the film's title has not changed. It's just a teaser poster.

That's about it for now. On Wednesday we plan on shoting a big scene with Scott Stohl (from Micheal Bay's "The Rock"). Check back soon.

Another weekend, another exhausted director

Slowly but surely we creep, but the end is near in sight. We shot all three days this weekend, though not for full days. The fondue gathering, the Ocean's Eleven montage, and the climactic battle of wits are in the can. A couple more weekends and we should be wrapped. Whitlock's got a mere two scenes left to shoot. That's how close we are to finishing.

Tomorrow morning we shoot with a Scarface veteran, which is more or less a secret so far. Oooooo.

Big ups to the cast and crew who are enduring this lengthy shoot. If we're not worked to literal death by the end of the shoot, I promise we'll have a fun movie for y'all.

Weekend Update

This weekend we finished up shooting in the dorms. We should be done shooting altogether rather soon. Checked Out star Jill Davis came in today to shoot her part. Fun stuff. And Joey has been slayin' on the set. Everything is going according to plan.

Also yesterday Nelson Blewitt and Nick Sweet rocked an ass in the Mormon Club shoot. Isn't Nelson Blewitt kind of a funny name?

AND We've edited together about 12 minutes of the flick so far. It's good. Can't wait to show y'all what we got. Don't forget to check our current "Scarface Productions Holds To Guerilla Ideals" article in the Northern Light. K. Peace out.

Tag Team, Back Again

We recently got our camera in the mail. We just spent a whole night reviewing the tapes and capturing them onto our editing computer. Funny stuff. Watching the footage on the television looked good. Watching them in an HD editing program looked effin' amazing.

Our shooting schedule is set. The next three weeks should see the end of shooting. We're all excited. I think. Whitlocks been nodding off in production meetings.

Small Delay

Nothing more. We had some issue with not having our equipment for a little while but now we're back on track. The rest of the shooting will happen faster and easier.

Here's whats happened, since we last updated.

A local investor offered to option Beekeeping for a considerable sum of money. It was tempting but we decided not take the offer and do it the Scarface way. We gathered support from within our walls and were able to get a camera of our own. We're doing some press this week for the movie and whats happening with it. Expect Stunts. Stromstad and Fink are on the campaign so who knows what the fuck we're going to come up with. Today Owen, Joey, and I did an interview for the Northern Light's shootout issue of the paper. Check it out next Tuesday and find out which Scarface Veteran guest is writing the story.

Also Joey and I are writing some new scenes for the movie. Going to push it over the edge. Can't wait.

Halloween Weekend

A busy weekend, to say the least.

On Friday we shot the big party scene here at Wickersham. Fairly elaborate shots with dozens of extras. Probably the biggest set I've ever been on, now that I think about it. There were several memorable moments. We shot scenes with first time Scarfacer's Whitney McIlwain, Arielle Young, Becky Sheridan, and more. Twas good stuff. The main cast did rather well too. We didn't tape quite all of what we needed, so another party will happen rather soon.

And Saturday and Sunday we shot in the UAA dorms. Big thanks to Sarah, Erin, Katie, and Skye, for letting us completely take over their quad living room for nearly two full days. We didn't finish quite all of the dorm stuff, however what we did shoot was really fucking good. Today was Joey Weaver's and Jared Fink's first day's shooting with dialogue, and let me just say that those guys are damn fine and funny actors. We're at about halfway done shooting this flick, and we're all convinced this movie is going to kick an ass and a half.

Update on the Weekend

We shot all day Friday. On Saturday, the shoot was tragically cancelled, but today (Sunday) we're back in the middle of shooting. We just called a dinner break of sorts, so I'd take the opportunity to update.

We had a few rocky moments this weekend, but mostly good ones. We had several extras come out this morning to shoot the freestyle rap club. Should be a fun one to edit.

And on Friday we got to see what very well be one of John Whitlock's finest moments ever. Thanks to all the extras that came out this weekend.

What I can say with assurance is that everyone is working very hard on this project and it's not uncommon for everyone on the set to be completely drained by the end of the shoot. I'm going to lie down for a few minutes afore I finish off today's shooting at the BEB. We'll try and post some more pics soon of the set.

Day 4 on the Set

We shot a couple club scenes today, which involved extras.The most well behaved, focused extras this no-budget filmmaker has yet seen.

So yeah, another day of Kyle, Owen, John and I doing our shit. Good stuff. Funny, I think. John and I had a chance to really go crazy improvising with a dozen strangers ambling about.

We are about to enter the bulk of our shooting. The next two weekends involve shooting for all of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Preparation of aforementioned weekends will take up most of my week.

Editing

We started editing Beekeeping last night.

Mike Collier, Jeff Warren, and myself huddled around the computer screen for an hour and finished one of the first scenes in the movie. Right when a few more people showed up I played the clip in full screen preview.

Everyone's jaw dropped.

Loos very very good so far.

Day 3 On The Set

With minor shooting delays this weekend we finally got around to shooting tonight.

The results were pleasing. We didn't quite finish our shooting goal for today, but aside from that we got a hell of a lot done. We shot seven scenes. Most in the KRUA radio station, one in the campus center.

We used all of the main four actors. Kyle's first day acting on the set was startlingly good. He's very energetic, and very easy to direct. You can tell he's always wanted to act. Owen was good again, and will add a pleasant dash of consistency and humor to the character. I think I did pretty well, but who knows. We'll see the footage soon.

But alas, my favorite part of the night was watching John Whitlock back in action after all this time. He hasn't lost it, folks.

But lest I not mention, our crew today. Jesse Warfield and Mike Collier. Things are beginning to go smoother. I think it took us a few shoots to learn how to work with each other, but we got it down.

Dave and I agree. This'n go be a good'n.

Moving Right Along

As you may have heard, our first day shooting went well.

We have a great crew making sure the movie looks and sounds good, which based on the dailys I saw a few days back, it most definitely does.

We're also shooting some more B-Roll stuff tomorrow, and maybe a few scenes Saturday. We still have yet to finalize a shooting schdule for the bulk of the film, but that will come soon.

So far, the performances, and the technical aspect of the film are pretty good. If my script is worth a damn this movie will go over well.

Check back for an update on this weeks shooting. Also, I'm in talks with a certain familiar actor about another surprise cameo character. This cast keeps getting better and better.

Rehearsal: Mike Sherry Edition

Today I rehearsed with Mike Sherry and Owen Gourley (under the watchful eye of Jared Fink)for the scene we are shooting tomorrow. It was pure gold. These are two guys that understand comedy. I cannot think of a better scene to shoot first. And might I suggest that Mike's third appearance in a Scarface Production will likely be his best.

Also, in casting news (which should end just about any day now), we signed on Becky Sheridan (of Scared Scriptless fame) for a bit part. Very funny gal. Dave and I have high hopes.
AND...
What was meant to be a secret if it came thought actually FELL through this morning. Tony Knowles (Election 2004) contacted us to let us know he cannot appear in a cameo role for the film. If you're disappointed by reading that, imagine how I feel.

Anyway, the ass kicking must commence. I am off to do some more.

Knocking On Filmings Door

If you think that the lack of updates on this site is an indication of the lack of progress, you sir, are an idiot.

We've been so busy working on things like rehearsal, location scouting, wardrobe, and props that there is little time to update a website read by only twelve people. Luckily, our small readership allows me to call you all idiots. Which come to think of it, isn't so much of a perk.

Anyway, things are coming together rather well. And tonight is a rehearsal with Owen Gourley, Mike Sherry, and myself. Tomorrow we shoot at video city, a familiar shooting ground in the Scarface realm. Wish us luck.

SHOOTING BEGINS NEXT WEEK

Preproduction is taking slightly longer than we'd like it to, but we will be shooting one scene next week, prior to the bulk of the shooting.

Mike Sherry, who is leaving town in October, will join Owen Gourley and myself at a shoot at a familiar Scarface type location. That's all I can say right now.

There's also alot of other stuff going on but it's all up in the air right now. Inofrmation will be dispersed as it comes in.

Busy, Busy, Busy

The cast is 90 percent complete. We need to fill two more crucial roles, and three simpler roles. Wednesday (tonight) we have about six auditions, and more later in the week, so hopefully we can be done with casting as soon as possible. Also, tomorrow or the next day we will find out whether or not a BIG name will be attached to the project. Unfortunately, if we do cast them, you'll have to wait until the film is released in December to find out who it is (or be on the set that day and be sworn to secrecy). ZAH.

Some of you may have known that we were half planning on shooting this film on a High Definition 24 frame type camera. It looks like that has come through so you can anticipate an uncharacteristically pretty looking Scarface Production.

Today Bogdan Shepherd, new addition to the cast, and Original Score composer worked with me on some of the electronic music tracks we need for the film. Good stuff, to say the least.

UAA types Kyle and Mike have recently joined our tech crew. It looks like we'll have a crowded set this time around. Probably the population density that Checked Out's set had, but this time filled with people who know how to operate audio and video equipment, rather than people who won't be quiet when we're trying to shoot a scene.

Speedy Progress

The auditions are coming along much faster than we anticipated. Response to our flyers has been limited, but the readings we have had were really damn good. Dave and I were just discussing how perfectly (and rapidly) the cast is coming together. We have less than five roles to fill at this point, and more auditions later this week.
Scarface Productions fans may be happy to know that this is a very in-house project. 80 percent of our cast members have appeared in "Checked Out", "Election 2004", or "The Jawes of Life". It may sound like the production will be tainted by the fact that we just put a bunch of our friends in the movie, but believe me: After hearing all the veterans read their parts, we have one hell of a solid cast so far. Everyone is placed right where they belong.
As of today:
Add Laura Greet, Nickie Cruthirds, and Hannah Harrison to the official castlist.

Also, a new member to our crew, Bill Kriegs, is proving to a be quite the valuable member of the now-formidable Scarface technical team. I think you will all get to know him a bit better as he will probably be on the set quite a bit, joining Jesse Warfield behind the camera.

Early scheduling and location scouting will start next week, and until then we're still hard at work building that cast. Be sure to check us out tonight (Thursday) and 6:00 pm on KRUA's talk show "Gray Matter", 88.1 FM, as Beekeeping will be discussed. Dave may be busy with some Anchorage Film Fest meetings, but I promise I'll bring at least one Scarface regular on the show with me. Should be fun. Peace out.

Scarface fans rejoice. We didn't want to let the cat out of the bag too early, but what the hell? We just got done doing a very late night read with Scarface legend Jeff Warren (Justin, to some). Some of you may have been wondering where his name was in all of this. Well. It's here now. And let me be the first to say his role is considerably well placed in the film. Essential, some would even say. Good stuff.
Though the Beekeeping script is perhaps the most accessible to a broad audience, this movie will be a downright treat for the true fans of Scarface Productions. A damned treat.
I wish I could say more, but I wouldn't want to ruin anything.

Auditions Update

Emails are coming in, slowly but surely. We're holding some auditions Friday and Saturday this week, and probably next week as well. Today I had to repost some flyers that have gone missing from UAA's bulletin boards. It was funny to see that the bulletin boards which are never changed at the LRC still had a flyer for our June Election 2004 screening.
Also today, I recorded a PSA for the auditions today at KRUA with the help of Kyle Johnston. They let me write the script, and voice the PSA myself. Fun stuff; you can definitely tell that I wrote the script for it. Keep it tuned to 88.1 FM to hear that gem of an advertisement. Also, the date is confirmed: Next Thursday, the 8th, I (and presumeably Dave) will go on one of KRUA's top rated shows "Gray Matter" to talk about the production.

Flyers, School, and KRUA

Today was the first day of school at UAA. Dave and I spent some time putting up audition flyers around the campus. Tomorrow and the next day will consist of covering the town with audition flyers, so anyone who wants to help shoot us an email. The highlight of today's preproduction was me talking to a Film Interpretation class about the production. The presentation ended with mild applause. Anyway. The campaign to find actors has begun. Here's hoping emails begin flooding in.
Today, we also talked to JR, manager of KRUA, and supporter of Scarface Productions. After a brief discussion, we got permission to shoot in the studio, which is needed for Beekeeping. Also, they're going to run a PSA for our auditions. Dave and I will probably go on a couple shows this week pimping the production. Also, we're working out some details about a concert scene, which we may possibly be able to tie in with a big concert that KRUA is sponsoring in October. Right now, the concert is top secret (I won't lie, they wouldn't even tell us who's coming).

Table Read

Today we had a multiple audition for Scarface veterans. Nick Sweet, Jake Bartholomew, John Whitlock and I read through the entire script as the main characters. I must admit I am rather worried that John is going to steal every scene, no matter how good a supporting cast we get. He was top notch as usual, adding in bits that no one could ever write.
And speaking of a supporting cast, I read the script with Joey Weaver yesterday. He's got a good handle on his character. Very funny stuff.
We've already received a couple emails back for other auditions. I have a feeling we'll get a pretty good turnout once we actually post these flyers around town. On Friday, Paul Jones is scheduled to read for one of the main characters. Within a week, I'll have a better idea of how many actors we need to find through auditions.
It's going good so far. There will be much more news throughout the week.

Beekeeping Premise

For those of you not in the immediate Scarface loop...well you might be wondering what our next movie is about. Below is a description. Some variation of this might one day grace the back of the DVD cover:

When college super-senior Mike DeVries discovers he is deep in debt with a collections agency, he needs to scrape up some cash- and fast. With the help of his wacky roommates, Keyes, Gary, and Barrett, he devises a scam aimed at the University. The four friends decide to start 12 campus clubs with the intent to use the club startup funds to pay off Mike's debts, and then simply abandon the clubs. Unfortunately for the roommates, the school's Dean catches wind of their plot and forces them to choose between being expelled and maintaining all of their preposterous clubs (including the Mormon club, the Crochet Club, and the Joy Luck Club). Mike and his friends quickly realize that running 12 clubs is much more than they can handle without the implementation of several sarcastic quips, profane outlashes, and unusual physical gags.

Scarface, Back Again

Hi, folks! Welcome to the Beekeeping Production Blog. Here, you will read about all the preproduction details of the next Scarface Production, a college comedy tentatively titled "Beekeeping". With two feature length films under the Scarface belt, the third endeavor promises to be our most ambitious and biggest project to date.
The bulk of the preproduction will take place in September, the shooting in October, and the editing in November. Check back here often for updates!
